The virtual Proteus is based on our hardware appliance and can be deployed into your existing virtual infrastructure.

Visibility

With Proteus, you see the network as never before. Proteus provides clear visibility to the entire IP infrastructure and all distributed DNS and DHCP services from one platform.

Complete view of Windows DNS and DHCP servers, and BlueCat’s Adonis DNS/ DHCP appliances.

  • Consolidates all DHCP lease and DDNS record updates.
  • Tools facilitate rapid searching of ever-changing DHCP and DDNS data.
  • Help desk productivity increases as troubleshooting is made more efficient.

Multi-Core Architecture

  • Provides separate ‘views’ into DNS and IP information.
  • Administrators configure IPAM data in the ‘core’ they are most familiar with. Any change to one core will automatically be reflected in the other. (For example, if an administrator adds a host record to DNS, then a statically allocated IP address  is added to the IP address space.)

Real-Time IP Address Tracking

  • Provides real-time data describing IP address allocation by zone and subnet.
  • Increases network management efficiency, reduces errors and enhances security.

Comprehensive IP Address Records

  • IP address records configured and maintained in Proteus include host names, MAC addresses, port data, date and time of address assignment, and user defined information (e.g. device serial numbers).
  • Helps administrators track networked assets, locate systems and troubleshoot problems.

User-Defined Fields

  • Define user or device attributes (i.e. meta data) for IP addresses ranges, subnets, devices, etc. For example, meta data can include device location, serial number, contact information, warranty expiry.
  • New and existing administrators can understand network designs and perform tasks more efficiently.
  • User-Defined Fields enable object tracking via the meta data defined for the object improving inventory management and enhancing Proteus’ reporting and audit functions.

Real-time notification of changes in DNS and DHCP services via the Proteus interface, e-mail and/or SNMP alerts.

  • Enables pro-active measures to prevent network outages and rapid response when problems occur. (For example, DHCP Alerts issuesnotifications when DHCP ranges are approaching full utilization.)
  • Event notifications, filtered by source and severity, ensure administrators can readily identify priority issues.

Service-Level Message Information Blocks (MIBs)

  • Provide very granular depictions of DNS/DHCP and operating system level services and statistics.

Auditable trail of all configuration changes and database transactions.

  • Tracks administrative actions by whom, what, where and when.
  • Ensures compliance with internal governance policies and external regulations.

Customized Report GenerationCustomized Report Generation

  • Prepared reports describe DNS server utilization, DHCP scope utilization, object tag assignments and summarize configuration changes.
  • Standard reports can be customized to present information in accordance with internal and external requirements.
  • Report formats include PDF, HTML, CSV, XLS and RTF.

Management

Reduce the time and effort spent managing your IP network. Proteus’ web-based interface provides centralized management of the complete IP address space and DNS name space. Advanced features ensure IT organizations ‘can do more with less’.

Advanced Modeling Tools

  • Administrators can model – partition, resize, and reallocate the IP address space under different scenarios to determine the optimal configuration. They can accurately forecast changing IP address requirements.
  • DNS and DHCP configurations can be verified prior to deployment without affecting the production network. Deployments can be scheduled at advantageous times.

Network Discovery

  • Discovers IP-enabled devices across geographically dispersed networks.
  • Configuration data can be built out from real-time network information.

IP Address Reconciliation

  • Identifies unused IP addresses for reclamation.
  • Uncovers unauthorized IP addresses (which can represent security vulnerabilities).

Simple, Scalable IP Address Allocation (and Re-allocation)

  • Large numbers of devices to be configured instantaneously, without affecting performance.
  • Setting up DHCP networks is straightforward – spreadsheet data can be imported, servers are assigned DHCP ranges, and DHCP options are chosen.
  • Leverages ISC DHCP's extensive options, so complicated DHCP networks can be configured with ease.

Object Tagging with Book Marking

  • Administrators can assign ‘object tags’ to any network component – IP address block, IP address, device, user, administrator, etc.
  • They can ‘bookmark’ frequently accessed parts of the network (e.g. SIP Servers). A click on a single tag opens that part of the network.
  • Enable administrators to quickly navigate a network configuration (without traversing a tree), assign resources and track objects according to business models rather than technology constraints. Their productivity and responsiveness improve.

Intuitive Configuration Wizards

  • Task-focused wizards streamline configurations and enhance overall ease of use.

Configuration Templates

  • Accelerates network design by replicating configuration information common to multiple subnets or zones.

Next Available Network / Address

  • Find the next available unused network or IP address.

Concurrent support for IPv4 and IPv6.

  • Seamlessly supports ‘dual stack’ IP environments.
  • Eases the transition from one standard to the next.

Migration Tools

  • Streamline the transfer of configuration data to Proteus from spreadsheets, databases and other IPAM systems.

Integration

Proteus’ integration features leverage your existing investments in network infrastructure.

Proteus Management Agent for Windows®

  • Extends intelligent IPAM to Windows DNS and DHCP services.
  • Leverages existing investments in Windows DNS and DHCP.

Centralized Monitoring through SNMP

  • Supports SNMP v1, v2 and v3.
  • Forwards system metrics and trap notifications to enterprise network management software.
  • Provides its own SNMP MIB for granular service attributes.

Syslog Redirection

  • Captures and forwards audit log data to a central syslog server.
  • Enables a centralized review of all log data.

Open standards, SOAP-based API

  • Supports easy integration with existing applications.
  • BlueCat’s Java® and Perl packages for web services reduce programming efforts.
  • API sessions are tracked in the audit log.

Control

Proteus enables you to control your IP network services – even when you delegate administrative responsibilities to others.

Hierarchical Administration Model

  • Centrally manages administrative access and privileges.
  • Senior network administrators can assign administrative access rights to others, regardless of their physical location.
  • Distributes the administrative workload.

Role-Based Administration

  • Proteus administrators can be assigned specific privileges – access to information and configuration capabilities – appropriate for their security clearance, and relevant to their responsibilities. (For example, junior administrators would be able to make network changes only within the boundaries of their assigned privileges.)

Proteus Workflow

  • Supports ‘controlled delegation’ of change management responsibilities without surrendering change control.
  • A senior administrator can delegate day-to-day configuration changes – adding a DNS host, reserving a DHCP address, provisioning a new subnet – to junior administrators, but the senior administrator must approve all changes prior to implementation.
  • Ensures accountability remains with those in charge.
  • Helps steel the system against configuration errors.

Authenticate Administrators with Active Directory, LDAP or RADIUS

  • Leverages existing authentication technologies.
  • Complies with internal security policies.

MAC Filtering

  • DHCP security provision restricts IP leases to devices with authorized MAC addresses.
  • Supports both ‘white lists’ and ‘black lists’.

DHCP Class and Vendor Options

  • Enables administrators to control distribution of DHCP options, based on the types of systems requesting IP addresses.
  • Supports recommended best practice of not divulging unnecessary configuration information to workstations.

DNS Naming Policies

  • Enforce company standard naming conventions designed to help administer networked devices.
  • Prevent network administrators from configuring hosts or zones with vulgar phrases, trademarked terms or other undesirable words.
  • Supports recommended security practice of choosing host names that do not indicate the system type.

Continuity

A wide range of business-critical applications - e-mail, web services, ERP, CRM and VoIP telephony - rely on IP networks, and core network services DNS and DHCP. Proteus’ failsafe technologies ensure your network is always ready to conduct business.

Hardware Redundancy

  • Proteus features redundant, hot swappable power supplies and RAID 1 disk arrays.
  • Hardware redundancy keeps IPAM data safe.

Data Checker

  • Routinely checks IPAM data, and DNS and DHCP configuration information for inconsistencies and faulty logic.
  • Indicates when configurations are not aligned with best practices.

Data Entry Validation

  • Automatically verifies data entry to significantly reduce syntax and logical errors that can cause service disruption.

Proteus Workflow

  • Administrators build and stage IP address and DNS/DHCP configurations in a ‘sandbox’, and analyze them thoroughly prior to deployment.
  • Configuration changes created by junior staff require verification by experienced administrators prior to deployment.

Data Restoration

  • Similar to a recycle bin, enables administrators to selectively restore deleted configuration data.
  • Provides a much-needed safety net, ensuring organizations can recover from errors.

Cross Over High Availability (XHA)

  • Appliance clustering with data replication and failover eliminates single points of failure.

DHCP Failover

  • Provides load balancing and failover redundancy.

Automated database backup/restoration

  • Backups to offsite servers are configurable to meet the requirements of disaster recovery programs.
  • Restore utilities allow blank-slate appliances to be loaded with the most current backup in minutes.

System reset returns appliance to the factory-default configuration.

  • Administrators can reload a database from backup implementing known good configuration.
  • Accelerates recovery from system failures.

Separation of Services

  • The Proteus  management platform is separate from DNS and DHCP servers.
  • Service layer continues to run, even in the event of a failure of the management layer.
